Second Grade Curriculum

Second grade is an exciting year, especially from a faith-based perspective. The students will learn many new concepts in all subject areas this year that will both excite and challenge them. They will also grow in faith as he/she begins to develop a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ while gaining an understanding of his/her Catholic faith. This is a journey involving the entire family where each member plays an important role in helping to create a Christ centered environment in the home.

  • Throughout 2nd grade the students will grow more in their faith and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church by learning prayers, the Mass, Holy Days, and the lives of the saints. Sacramental preparation for Penance and Holy Eucharist are received in this level.
  • The Language Arts curriculum involves four major components which consist of oral language, word work, reading, and language arts. For oral language the students are exposed to oral vocabulary and phonemic awareness. In word work, the students build their phonic skills, spelling strategies, and expand their vocabulary usage. Reading consists of both comprehension and fluency. Comprehension is incorporated through various strategies and skills. Fluency is accomplished through such skills as word automaticity, echo-read, choral reading, and repeated reading. Language Arts encompasses grammar and writing. Our 2nd grade writing curriculum targets the four major writing styles: Narrative, Expository, Descriptive, and Persuasive.
  • All the new math concepts are developed through hands-on activities and rice mathematical conversations that actively engage students in the learning process. Concepts are developed, reviewed, and practiced over time. Students move from the concrete to the abstract.
  • The Science curriculum provides the students’ knowledge and skills in Life, Earth and Physical Science. The students will have a better understanding on God’s creation.
  • The students are engaged in American History, different cultures, all about the planet Earth and its resources, the economic system of our country as well as how one can become a productive citizen. Handwriting entails posture, proper pencil grip and certain exercises that can strengthen fine motor skills used in both manuscript and cursive.
