Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum

The St. Theresa Pre-kindergarten program is a developmentally appropriate theme-based curriculum,  striving to honor our mission of educating for life with the heart and mind of Christ. Our focus is on the whole child and their spiritual, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Our goal is to provide an enviroment which promotes a joy of learning. Through a hands-on approach the students will experience their learning, expanding their creativity, curiosity, decision-making, and problem soliving skills, as well as challenging them as they grow in age and develop their independence and maturity. Our day consists of activities which include Circle Time (whole group) where concepts, themes and religion are introduced. Center Time (small group) incorporates teacher-directed activities and independent learning centers. In addition the students are enriched through Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education classes.

  • Following our school mission the Pre-K students will learn about God’s love for us. They will be introduced to the importance of prayer, Bible stories, the Holy Family, and saints. They will learn Jesus’ teachings to love God and to love others and will understand that God created us and the world we live in.
  • The Pre-K will have their first formal instruction in the recognition of letters and sounds along with exposure to literature through stories, nursery rhymes, and fingerplays. Pre-writing skills and story creating will be emphasized through Journaling which will enhance their vocabulary as they draw pictures and dictate sentences and stories. They will develop their fine motor skills through a variety of activities such as cutting, using a pencil, stenciling, and coloring.
  • Pre-K Math is experienced daily through hands-on activities which include counting, sorting, one-to-one correspondence, and patterning. The students will recognize and learn shapes, numbers, directions, as well as quantity and positions and will develop problem solving skills.
  • Through exploring activities, using scientific tools (magnets, magnifying glasses, scales), the students will learn about the world around them. They will investigate plants and animals, observe weather, and learn about the Solar System.
  • The development of Social Skills is an integral part of our Pre-K Program. Students will learn how to interact with others in a classroom setting, while developing their skills of problem-solving, conflict resolution, and sharing. They will gain independence as they further develop skills on basic personal needs. Through the Social Studies curriculum, the students will learn about our country, presidents, the role of community helpers, and modes of transportation. They will also participate in projects to help others in need such as a Trike-A-Thon for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
